Review - Six by Nico, Manchester

Updated: Jun 8, 2022

This is not the first time I have been here I am an avid fan now, it's just the first time I have taken the time to put a review together.

#1: The Concept

Six by Nico is based around a 6-course taster menu that changes every 6 weeks. It's such a great idea not only from a commercial point of view, as there is probably a lot less waste as only the ingredients for the 6 courses need to be purchased, prepped and cooked etc. the restaurant will know in advance how many covers they have booked each night and each chef will be able to perfect the dish they are responsible for. Also from a customer point of view, you can revisit the place every 6 weeks and it's. a whole new culinary experience as it's a new menu. It's not like going to the same Italian place every 6 weeks and starting to run out of dishes you want to try.

At the time of writing this the 6 courses cost £37 - but make note if you are going out on a budget there is also a service charge to add to the bill, to save embarrassment. There is also the option of an aperitif and snack to have at the start of the menu which is also themed to compliment the taster menu, I think these prices vary but usally around £6.50 per person for the sanck and £7.50 for the aperitif. You can also opt for a wine pairing for an extra £30 per head. You get a small glass of wine with each course which equates to 2 full glasses of wine by the end.

The interior is well designed, and modern with a hint of industrial. Very clean and welcoming and the lighting is always spot on in the evening (not lit up like a runway with floodlights but nice and soft and inviting.

#2: The Menu

This menu was themed around Hollywood so each dish was inspired by a Holywood Movie.

#3: Pros and Cons

PROS:

New menu every 6 weeks

Taster menu so you get to try lots of different dishes

You try things you probably wouldn't regularly order

Very affordable for a taster menu

Excellent service and food

CONS:

The only con I can think of is that I will soon struggle to get a table because it will become so popular

#4: The Final Score

This place definitely gets my first (but well deserved)

I book each menu a few months in advance to make sure I can get a booking. I don't even need to know what the menu is first as I know I will love it. I have not had one bad dish yet. The service and standard of the food are consistently superb. The staff are friendly, and welcoming, and explain each course before you get stuck in. It never seems rushed and each course comes out at a relaxed pace.

A place I would wholeheartedly recommend.
