Review: Grandpa Green's - Diggle

Updated: May 28, 2022

Intro: I had been for lunch with a group of friends at Diggle Lock (review to follow) and we also planned to head over to Grandpa Green's for dessert as one of my friend's daughter worked there, so couldn't join us for lunch

1: Your First Impressions

Haven't been here in a while and to say it has grown in size since I last went is probably a huge understatement. There seem to be additions next to add ons and it was about 5 times the size I remember it being.

It was a Sunday afternoon when we went so I expected it to be busy. When we arrived there was a rather confusing Alton Towers-style barriers queuing system in operation. There were however several different entrances for eating in or takeaway so we weren't really sure where to go. I think we actually jumped the queuing of people on their way down and just asked for a table for 7.

The place originally started as a small Ice cream hut and has grown into a snack/brunch/sundae destination. We were seated on a double table and within minutes someone was over to take our order. The first thing I did notice was that there was a dog menu, this seems to be a common theme in this area as it is very popular with dog walkers.

2: What we had

We all had a dessert except Fi who had a coffee with floating vanilla ice cream. Mike had chocolate brownies, Matt and Tony had the waffles, Alex had pancakes and I went with the Sundae with a Slattery's Easter Egg.

When they arrived they were VERY generous portions. I guess for close to £10 per dessert though you would expect them to be big. . For some reason, I was expecting it to be served IN an Easter Egg with the top chopped off or something. When it arrived it was a huge gin-type glass filled with cookies and cream and chocolate Icecream.

Now with the exception of Mike everybodys came with chocolate ice cream. Mike was the only one who managed to finish his. For the rest of us it felt like too much. I LOVE chocolate but even for me it was over-facing and too much chocolate. They were all very well presented and looked great but just too much. The pancake dessert was 5 pancakes! when there is also chocolate sauce on the dessert I think it is overkill to add chocolate ice cream.

3: Pros and Cons

Personally, I think the desert would be better smaller and half the price. I would hate to think about what it would cost for a family to come for dessert. That said though there was the option to just have ice cream, let's face it when kids see these coming out, who is gonna settle for a cone and one scoop?

4: The Final Score

I would give this place

Lovely setting, a bit too heavy on the chocolate ice cream, and a little pricey, especially if it was a family of 4. That said for a treat now and again it's definitely worth a visit.
